“Patience My Ass…I’m Gonna Kill Something.”

When I was a kid in the early 1970s, it was one of my favorite t-shirt designs.   As an executive in the 2000s, it was a mantra I often invoked in board meetings and staff sessions.   All these years later, now through my aviation art business’s association with retired Air Force General Ronald “Buzzard” Fogleman, I now fully appreciate the origin of this time-honored and iconic American slogan.  And am pleased to feature it in a very unique and limited edition honoring his military service.  But first, some background…
Long before he was a four-star General and U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff, in June of 1968 Gen. Fogleman was flying F-100s with the 510th Tactical Fighter Squadron out of Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam.  During a ground attack mission in September of ‘68, enemy fire disabled his F-100, forcing him to eject.  Evading capture, in a dramatic rescue he clung to the open gun bay door of a US Army AH-1 Cobra helicopter and was carried 20 miles to a special forces camp.    Later that year volunteered for and continued to fly 80 missions over Laos and North Vietnam in F-100s with the elite forward air controllers known as Misty FACS.  
In June of 2026, Gen. Fogleman signed this extremely limited edition of just five pieces (plus two artists proofs) honoring his 510th TFS combat service with the “Buzzards of Bien Hoa.”
As I was unable to obtain F-100 skin, I used the next best thing – more F-4 Phantom aluminum.  The hand-painted art is inspired not (per my usual) by the 510th’s official unit insignia, but instead by one of several unofficial patch designs featuring the cartoon buzzard on a branch proclaiming “Patience my ass…. I’m gonna kill some body.”   In 1969 it was the theme of various party suit patches commissioned in-country by members of the fighting 510th TFS “Buzzards” (from whence Gen. Fogleman’s callsign originated).   My hand painted art stays largely true to one of the better patch designs of that era, including the odd grammar and font spacing.  This one received Gen. Fogleman’s approval, as he explained that’s it’s among the patches sewn on his 510th TFS party suit that is now in the “Misty FAC” collection of the National Museum of the USAF.
AP 1/2 and AP 2/2 are ready to hang in my standard Peruvian Walnut shadow-box frame - available for purchase and immediate shipment.  The edition of five, available by commission, is expected to sell out quickly once our video promos are posted this fall.   Frame size is approximately 22” by 23” (pieces may vary slightly by size).  
As always, each ready-to-hang panel comes with my letter of provenance that includes photos taken at the signing.   As a bonus, included is a diagram of the F-4 showing the location on the Phantom from which the original, new-in-the-box aluminum was sourced.
